This is a seminar for students preparing for a bachelor or master thesis with the software engineering group. Students meet on a weekly basis to present and discuss their latest results. The seminar is a requirement to write a thesis at the software engineering chair.

Weekly sessions

Our weekly meetings are on Fridays at 2:15pm in E 91 room 2.22. Please contact us if you are interested but cannot attend at this time. The sessions and their topics are announced via email.

Registration

If you would like to join the seminar, please contact Ezekiel Soremekun to be added to the mailing list and to be notified about upcoming sessions.

Requirements for obtaining a Schein

Read our guide on How to do a Thesis in Software Engineering for details about the seminar and thesis process. In order to obtain a Schein you need to successfully complete the following tasks:
  • You need to find a thesis topic and an advisor. Please contact Andreas Zeller for this. We recommend to do this early because we can offer only a limited number of thesis topics.
  • You need to attend the seminar at least 10 times. Your attendance can start at any time and need not be completed within a single semester.
  • You need to prepare your thesis. This includes finding and reading related literature, meeting your advisor and getting familiar with your topic. This is a major part of the seminar and will be mostly self-study.
  • You need to write a proposal . Read more on writing a thesis proposal in our guide.
  • You need to give a talk in which you present your thesis topic to the other students.
  • You need to register the thesis in the semester after you received the seminar schein (at the latest).. If you fail to do so, you need to attend another master seminar (probably at another chair) before you can start another thesis.

To ensure that you are added to the mailing list, contact Ezekiel Soremekun or register in a seminar session.

After getting the Schein, students need to register their thesis at the Prüfungsamt.

You may also want to review the regulations of the Computer Science Department of Saarland University where they apply to the Bachelor (§17, page 13) and Master (§24, page 19) seminar and thesis.

Presenting in the seminar

Once your proposal is accepted, you have to present your topic in the seminar. The purpose of this 20-minutes talk is to receive feedback from your fellow students and the PhD students. After your talk you can expect at least 10 minutes of questions.

The talk will be graded and we recommend that you revise our advice on How to give a good talk.

Please contact Ezekiel Soremekun if you have any questions.
