Andreas Zeller is a full
professor for Software Engineering at
Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany. His
research
concerns the analysis of complex software systems, their security properties, and their development process. His
students
are funded by companies like Google, Microsoft, or SAP. In 2010, Zeller was inducted as
Fellow of the ACM for his contributions to
automated debugging
and
mining software archives.
In 2011, he received an
ERC Advanced Grant, Europe's highest and most prestigious individual research grant,
for work on
specification mining and test case generation.
In 2013, he co-founded Testfabrik AG, a start-up for automatic testing of Web applications.
Current work
My group and I are currently working on five topics:
- Software Testing — Can one test applications systematically and automatically? (We can.)
- Specification Mining — Can we generate abstractions that capture the common properties of multiple programs or runs, identifying normal and abnormal behavior? (Yes.)
- Automatic Parallelization — Can we automatically parallelize existing software? (Frequently.)
- Mining Software Archives — What can we predict from the history of changes and errors? (A lot.)
- Automated Debugging — When a program fails, can we automatically determine the cause for the failure? (We can.)
See my publications for my most recent work, and check out my book
"Why Programs Fail",
for the state of the art in automated debugging.
